Hon. Joshua Chinedu Obika (MHR), the Member Representing the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency of the FCT, has called for the establishment of a dedicated land reservation framework for the original inhabitants of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He made this advocacy during an interactive session with the House Committee on Area Councils and Ancillary Matters, alongside the Department of Resettlement and Compensation of the FCT Administration, at the National Assembly Complex.

During the engagement, Hon. Obika stressed the urgent need to address the welfare and historical rights of indigenous communities affected by the territory’s development. He specifically proposed the creation of a robust agency mandated to oversee resettlement and compensation, ensuring that processes are transparent, equitable, and timely.

Furthermore, the lawmaker highlighted the potential of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements as a viable model to fast-track resettlement projects. He argued that collaborating with private developers would not only accelerate the provision of infrastructure and housing for displaced persons but also ensure sustainable community development within the FCT.

The interactive session served as a platform to deliberate on critical challenges facing the area councils and to propose legislative solutions for the effective resettlement and compensation of bonafide indigenes of the FCT.
