  • The FCT Need, A Standard Response Agency. – Hon. Joshua Chinedu Obika-MHR

Hon. Joshua Chinedu Obika-MHR is pushing for a standard response agency in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Yesterday, the management team of FCT Emergency Management Agency, led by Acting DG Abdulrahman Mohammed, met with Hon. Obika to discuss making FCTEMA an independent body, just like other states have their own State Emergency Management Agencies.

The FCTEMA’s major roles include:

– Disaster Management: coordinating responses to natural disasters and emergencies
– Relief: providing aid and support to affected communities
– Risk Reduction: implementing measures to prevent or mitigate potential disasters.

This move aims to enhance the FCT’s emergency response capabilities and ensure more effective management of disasters.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) serves as a model for state-level emergency management agencies. Established in 1999, NEMA coordinates disaster management efforts nationwide, with zonal offices in each of the six geo-political zones.

Having a standard response agency in the FCT would align with NEMA’s structure and ensure better coordination and response to emergencies in the capital territory.
