Hon.Joshua Chinedu Obika, Member Representing AMAC/BWARI federal constituency FCT, has called for the establishment of an independent police force for the Federal Capital Territory, backed with increased funding and modern technology, to effectively tackle insecurity and stimulate economic growth in Abuja.
Speaking on the need for a sustainable security architecture, Hon.Obika stressed that dedicating at least 2% of the FCT’s Internally Generated Revenue to fund an independent police force would provide a lasting solution to the capital city’s rising security concerns. “Put security in place, and you have done alot for the people”, Obika stated.
He observed that Abuja continues to experience an increasing influx of people, with over 65% of newcomers arriving without stable employment or livelihood, thereby creating pressure on security.
Hon.Obika emphasized that addressing insecurity requires not just manpower but also adequate funding and the deployment of advanced security. technologies. “The FCT Police Force needs more funding and the integration of modern security tools, surveillance cameras, drones, digital tracking systems, and efficient communication networks. These technologies will enhance intelligence gathering, quick response, and proactive crime prevention,” he explained.
Beyond security, the lawmaker highlighted the link between safety and economic development, stressing that no modern city can create enough jobs for its residents without vibrant nightlife activities.
“There is no city like ours in Abuja, or anywhere in the world, that can generate enough jobs for its residents without nightlife. At night, so many activities go on that create employment. When people feel secure, they can freely move out at night, spend money, and support businesses. These businesses, through the taxes they pay, also strengthen government revenue,” he added.
Hon. Obika concluded that security is both a social necessity and an economic driver. With the right funding, an independent FCT Police Force, and the application of modern technology, Abuja can achieve improved safety, thriving nightlife, job creation, and stronger internally generated revenue.
