The dynamic member representing AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency, Hon. Joshua Chinedu Obika, delivered a powerful keynote address at the 4th Matriculation Ceremony of the FCT College of Nursing Sciences, Gwagwalada, where he charged the newly admitted students to embrace the profound responsibility of their chosen vocation.
In his address to the matriculating class, Hon. Obika celebrated nursing as a noble and purpose-driven profession. He emphasized that the decision to enter the field of nursing is a personal commitment to service and humanity.
“You have chosen a path not of mere occupation, but of vocation. The white uniform you aspire to wear is a symbol of purity, care, and trust,” Hon. Obika stated. “This choice you have made of your own volition is one of the most significant you will ever make. I admonish you to be deeply committed to it. Your dedication will have an immeasurable impact on the health and well-being of our society at large. You are the future guardians of our community’s health, and we are counting on your passion, skill, and compassion.
Beyond the inspirational message, Hon. Obika used the platform to announce significant legislative progress for the institution. He provided a detailed update on his sponsored bill, “The Bill for an Act to Establish the FCT College of Nursing and Midwifery, Gwagwalada. The landmark legislation, which has successfully passed its First Reading in the National Assembly, is designed to transform the college into a center of excellence for specialized healthcare training. The bill mandates the institution to train and certify nursing personnel in a wide array of critical and specialized fields, including:Cardiovascular Nursing, Dermatology & Gynaecology, Nephrology & Pediatrics, Orthopedics & Public Health, Neonatal & Geriatric Care, Mental Health & Psychiatry, Critical Care and Emergency Nursing
Hon. Obika underscored that the formal establishment of the college through this Act is a strategic move to solve its perennial funding challenges.
“The passage of this bill is a top priority for my office. Once enacted, this legislation will provide a sustainable statutory framework for the college, ensuring that funding will no longer be a hindrance to its growth and development,” he affirmed. This is about investing in our future. By equipping this institution to produce highly specialized nurses, we are directly addressing the healthcare needs of the FCT and Nigeria as a whole, creating a healthier and more resilient society.
The event was attended by so many top government functionaries, the college’s management, academic staff, proud parents, and the bright cohort of new students, who received the news with great enthusiasm.
