In a compassionate response to the recent fire that ravaged the International Timber Market in Dei-Dei FCT Abuja, the Member representing AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency, Hon. Joshua Chinedu Obika, paid an on-the-ground assessment and sympathy visit to the scene of the incident today.
Hon. Obika expressed profound sorrow and solidarity with the affected traders and workers. He personally commiserated with victims, listening to their accounts of the devastating loss.
Hon. Obika underscored the critical need for proactive measures to mitigate such disasters in the future. He delivered a three-part advisory to the traders and market leadership. The lawmaker strongly urged all business owners to insure their goods and properties. He emphasized that insurance is not an expense but a vital safety net that can provide a crucial financial cushion for recovery in the event of unforeseen disasters. Hon. Obika advised the immediate procurement and strategic placement of functional fire extinguishers throughout the market. He also recommended that traders be trained in their basic usage to enable a swift initial response before the arrival of fire services. To help prevent future occurrences and aid in incident investigation, he called for the installation of security cameras within the market. This, he noted, would serve as both a deterrent and a tool for accountability.
Hon. Obika concluded by assuring the constituents of his commitment to liaising with relevant federal and FCT agencies to explore avenues for providing relief and support to the victims, reaffirming his dedication to the welfare and security of the people of AMAC/Bwari.
