The Honourable Member representing AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency, Rep. Joshua Chinedu Obika, has strongly criticized the absence of the FCT Indigenous Political Class at the 2025 FCT International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (FCT IDWIP) celebration held yesterday at the old parade ground, Area 10 Abuja.
Hon. Obika, a leading advocate for the rights of the Federal Capital Territory’s Original Inhabitants, actively participated in the event, engaging fully with cultural exhibitions and traditional performances. The celebration, focused on empowering Indigenous voices, promoting rights, and preserving cultural heritage, was a significant platform for the FCT’s indigenous communities.
Expressing profound disappointment, Hon. Obika stated: “Events like the FCT IDWIP are crucial opportunities for the Original Inhabitants to demonstrate their unity and remind the Nigerian government that they are a formidable community, rightful custodians of the nation’s capital. The failure of the indigenous political leadership to attend and support this occasion is deeply regrettable.
During the proceedings, Hon. Obika led attendees in a solemn one-minute silence in honour of the late Kamaludeen Muhammad Danladi Karshi, who lost his life advocating for equity for the FCT’s indigenous population.
FCT’s Original Inhabitants present at the event commended Hon. Obika for his unwavering commitment to their cause, his consistent identification with their struggles, and his leadership in championing their rights.
Hon. Obika, further pledged his office’s full support for organizing next year’s FCT International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (FCT IDWIP) celebration. This commitment includes providing monetary assistance and actively mobilizing support by engaging numerous organizations and attracting diverse participants. Hon. Obika specifically pledged the sum of N500,000 (Five Hundred Thousand Naira) to support the 2025 FCT IDWIP event, aiming to enhance its scale and impact.
