Hon. Joshua Chinedu Obika, Member of the House of Representatives representing AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has called for improved welfare packages and constitutional recognition for traditional rulers in the FCT.
Speaking during a visit by FCT traditional rulers to the House Committee on FCT Area Councils and Ancillary Matters, Hon. Obika emphasized the need for better remuneration and security for traditional leaders, describing their current welfare package as “laughable” and insufficient to cover basic security needs.
He criticized the meager allowances paid to traditional rulers by Area Council Chairmen, stating that it is insufficient to sustain their security and operational needs.
Hon. Obika expressed concern over the irregularity of security meetings between area council chairmen and traditional rulers, stressing that such engagements are crucial for addressing rising insecurity.
He lamented that several traditional rulers in his constituency have lost their lives to kidnappings due to poor security measures and neglect. Over three traditional rulers in AMAC/Bwari have been killed by kidnappers, highlighting the urgent need for better protection.
Hon. Obika proposed that traditional rulers should be constitutionally recognized in decision-making processes, particularly on issues affecting FCT indigenes. He argued that such inclusion would help resolve challenges related to resettlement, compensation, and community development.
Moving forward, Hon. Obika urged the committee to mandate Area Council Chairmen in FCT, to prioritize security collaborations with traditional rulers and review their welfare packages. He also called for legislative action to strengthen the role of traditional institutions in FCT governance.
This advocacy aligns with broader calls for empowering traditional rulers in Nigeria’s security and administrative frameworks, particularly in regions facing heightened insecurity.
